Glurch the Abominous Mass

Glurch

Glurch the Abominous Mass is the first boss most players would encounter and fight and is the easiest by far, more meant as a tutorial boss than anything else. This guide is a basic instruction for new players

Early Info[]

Health and Damage Stats
Stat Casual Standard Hard
Health 1230 2459 3688
Damage 20-24 40-48 80-96

Glurch's arena is found 65 tiles from the core. Locating it isn't very hard as your screen will shake along with a thumping noise every time Glurch lands on the ground.

Dirt Block
Warning! Getting to close to Glurch will cause it to start attacking you, so stay at least 7 tiles away from it.

There will be a nearby Ancient Waypoint, activate it and return to your base to continue.

Gear[]

Tome of the Dark

Generally, this early on would only need a full set of armor, so it does not matter what. But it is recommended to have Copper armor or Rain armor. For Weapons it would matter little whether it is a Melee weapon, Range weapon or Magic weapon as Glurch moves fast enough to reach you quickly while using any sort of weapon. It is recommended to have a Tome of the Dark to deal extra damage to Glurch.

Consumable/Food[]

The best food for fighting Glurch is any cooked food made with a Yellow Blister Head fish.

Yellow Blister Head
Warning! To obtain a yellow blister head you need to locate a water source in The Clay Caves, which is outside of normal progression (This will be the only time which these guides allow abnormal progression).

This food will prevent you from being slowed down by ground slime for 10 minutes, so only one is needed in most cases. Other food could include any combination of two reasonable health recovery foods.

Additionally, bomb pepper foods increase the player's speed, making it easier to dodge Glurch.

Arena Setup[]

Due to the difficulty of editing the area around Glurch without provoking him, it is best to use the current arena or create a close by arena.

Ground Slime
Note, Glurch cannot go more than 25 tiles away from his rune, so keep that in mind.

Using a Copper Hoe or better, you could clear away some of the ground slime temporarily, to make movement easier.

The Fight[]

The final stage of this tutorial is, of course, the fight against Glurch. Glurch attacks by quickly hopping around, trying to stomp the nearest player. You can either run away while shooting projectiles at it, or only back just out of reach and then swipe it with a melee weapon.

This will continue until Glurch reaches 30% health, at which he will stop where he is for a moment before continuing to leap towards the players, but at a much faster rate.

Crude Bomb
Additional fighting strategy: when Glurch jumps towards you, place a bomb and run out of the way, when Glurch lands, he'll suffer major damage.

Aftermath[]

Glurch Eye

After successively defeating Glurch, you'll be greeted by a newly accessed merchant, the Bearded Merchant. Near him will be a Glurch Chest with mostly random loot, except for the Glurch Eye, which can be placed in the Glurch Statue near The Core. Placing it is required for progression.
