Malugaz's arena is found 300 tiles from The Core, it is in the center of a large labyrinth in The Forgotten Ruins.
Malugaz has to be summoned using a Skull of the Corrupted Shaman.
There will be an Ancient Waypoint nearby.
Gear[]
Armor[]
For pre-Great Wall gear, Iron armor is the best classless armor, although Stone armor is also good due to its damage reduction against bosses.
Melee is difficult to use against Malugaz due to the danger of his close combat damage, but if you were to use melee armor; Iron armor is best.
Soaring armor increases Movement speed, Magic barrier strength, and Mana regeneration; so, it is a good option for magic.
The Chieftain armor is the best summoner armor, but the player needs only two pieces of it to get the set bonus; so, combining the Chieftain tunic with the headdress and the Witch Doctor jeans, or with the shorts and the Witch Doctor hat, would be quite effective.
Physical range does not have many good options for full sets, so a combination of an Iron helmet, Caveling chest, and Bronze pants would be best for high damage output with moderate defensive stats along with a small dodge chance boost.
Weapons[]
the Arcane Staff is the best weapon to use against Malugaz due to its fast attack rate along with low mana cost and moderate damage, although it is harder to get due to only dropping from Ghorm and Malugaz.
The Battle Axe is good in close combat situations.
Using Melee weapons is riskier because of the intense melee fighting of Malugaz in his second phase.
The Grubzooka is a good weapon for its heavy damage and destructive hits, although its slow attack rate is a drawback. Additionally, the Iron Bow is another good Range weapon for this period of the game, although it is also relatively slow too.
For Summon weapons, there is only one option at this point in the game: being the Tome of the Dark.
Other Gear[]
The Large Watering Can is very important in this fight as it will put out any fire made by Malugaz.
The Rift Lens is very useful to dodge the fire and the Malugaz's attacks.
Consumables/Food[]
Potions[]
Healing Potions are vital for this fight, as the rapid damage of Malugaz can really drain your health quickly.
It is best to keep many Stoneskin Potions, Pact of Power Potions for Summoning, Keen Potions for Range damage, and Arcane Potions for Magic damage, on you.
Food[]
The best Foods to get should be ones that boost speed (Bomb Pepper), boost ranged attack damage/speed (Dagger Fin, Teal Palace Fish, and Devil Worm), or with healing properties (Mushroom, Crown Squid, Heart Berry, Pink or Teal Palace fish). Any combination of these is quite effective for a food.
Arena Setup[]
The arena is difficult to expand due to Obsidian Walls surrounding it.
Inside the arena, clear out all decorations except the pillars, these will be useful in blocking Malugaz's fireballs.
The pillars are easily destroyed by the fireballs, so they won't last long.
The Fight[]
To start the fight, you must place the Skull of the Corrupted Shaman on the Malugaz Rune, drink all of your potions and get out your weapons. Start shooting the Arcane Staff or Other Ranged weapon at Malugaz while dodging his fireballs, due to their size, a single sidestep won't work very well. Use the pillars to block the fireballs, note that this will destroy the pillar hit. Malugaz's other main attack in the first phase is that he will spawn several fires scattered on the ground in the vicinity of the player. Every few attacks he will teleport to a different spot in the arena, or he will do a small Fire Blast summoning a 3x3 fire area of effect.
If you use melee, it is best to circle Malugaz to dodge fireballs, although fire make this tougher to do without losing your health quickly.
The Attacks go in a random order, switching between Fireball and Summoning Fire, and sometimes Teleport/Fire Blast.
To put out the fires, you must use the Large Watering Can to pour water on it.
When Malugaz runs out of health, he will fully restore it, rip off his cloak, and reignite himself.
In his second phase: he will more rapidly teleport around, but instead of fireballs, he will lunge at the player, leaving a 3x3 area of fire on the ground. It is very important to dodge him as he can deal intense damage. Using melee weapons is more dangerous in the second phase than the first; so, it is better to use ranged weapons. The fires will eventually dissipate, but it is still better to use the watering can.
Eventually, Malugaz will run out of health again; but this time, he will die, ending the fight.
Aftermath[]
After defeating Malugaz, he will drop numerous rare items, such as the Skull Ring and Necklace, you can also get an arcane staff or battle axe if you do not already have one. But the most important drop is the Stolen Crystal Heart, which is placed in the Malugaz Statue. If both other statue Bosses are defeated, then this will awaken The Core, continuing the storyline.
