The Shimmering Frontier is a crystalline biome that generates at a distance of 900–1170 tiles from The Core. It starts out as egg-shaped blobs inside Azeos' Wilderness, Sunken Sea and Desert of Beginnings, before becoming a full ring at 1080 tiles from The Core.
The Shimmering Frontier is surrounded by hard Crystal Blocks and inside there are crystals, trees and grass that emit blue light. Occasionally, alien structures can be seen.

Alien tech lab[]
Alien tech labs are small dungeons that generate rarely in the Shimmering Frontier.
Some tech labs contain a challenge arena, which is a circular room with a glowing terminal in the middle, surrounded by Materializers. Interacting with it will cause a green ring to appear and enemies will begin to spawn in waves from the Materializers.
While the player is within the green ring the gauge shown on the terminal will slowly fill, leaving the ring will cause it to turn red and slowly deplete. Once the gauge is full, all enemies remaining in the room will be removed and a reward chest will appear in the center. If the gauge is completely depleted the terminal will deactivate and the remaining enemies will be removed until the challenge is attempted again.
Until the challenge is completed all objects inside the arena are indestructible. It is not necessary to defeat the enemies to complete the challenge.
The reward chest contains 2–3 upgrade gems based on the biome the arena is in (Jungle Emerald in Azeos' Wilderness, Ocean Sapphire in the Sunken Sea and Desert Ruby in the Desert of Beginnings), 5 random loot rolls, and the Nuclear Battery (only a 20% chance if the Brave Merchant is already alive).

Trivia[]
- Prior to its release, the Shimmering Frontier was referred to by the developers as the "crystal biome".
- Blobs of Obsidian Blocks were used as a placeholder for the Shimmering Frontier prior to its introduction. This was likely for both the purpose of foreshadowing the future content, and preventing long time players from needing to travel out extra far to locate the biome.
- The blobs would increase in amount and size the further out the player traveled, with them being almost non-existent at the inner edge of the outer biomes.) They often took odd shapes, merging with other sub-biomes and scenes and even containing inaccessible spaces within.
